Featured Open Lecture: Modified Lipids and Lipoproteins

This is a lecture given by Professor Joseph Witztum at the 87th EAS Congress in Maastricht, in the frame of the workshop entitled “Lipoproteins, lipids and atherosclerosis”. Professor Witztum is Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, USA and he is the Anitschkow Prize Winner of 2020.

In his excellent and up-to-date overview, Professor Witztum talked about the oxidation hypothesis of atherosclerosis revisited and focused on the role of oxidized phospholipids (OxPL) in inflammation, atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). He showed that OxPL are key molecules that contribute to inflammation and link hypercholesterolemia, lipid infiltration and free radical formation. Professor Witztum further demonstrated that in addition to their important role in atherosclerosis, OxPL are also key molecular mediators of NASH. He concluded that targeting OxPL may be an effective, likely safe, therapeutic strategy for both, atherosclerosis and NASH.
It is a very important and comprehensive lecture you should not miss.
