Introducing Featured Open Lectures

This is a new initiative from the Society to highlight our online educational platform EAS ACADEMY. Every other month we select one interesting lecture from a recent course or congress and make it available for free, to members and non-members.

Open Lecture January - February 2019

Genetic disorders of lipid metabolism – with special focus on familial hypercholesterolemia.
Professor Kees Hovingh, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

This presentation was given during the EAS Advanced Course “Epidemiology and Genetics of Atherosclerosis, and Causality of Risk Factors”. Copenhagen October 10th-12th 2018

Kees Hovingh is a leading scientist in the field of genetic lipid disorders and their role in cardiovascular disease. In this lecture he covers a wide range of the genetic diseases affecting lipid metabolism.
However, his focus is on the most common clinical disorder, Famililal Hypercholesterolaemia. In recent years our understanding of the epidemiology, the genetics as well as the metabolic background to the disease has increased tremendously. Furthermore the new therapeutic options have increased the importance of detecting and to proper treatment of these patients.
The new drugs have the potential to bring lipid levels to guideline recommended goals and give the patients back a normal life expectancy. The lecture by Kees Hovingh will give you a good overview of these subjects and update on the most recent research and therapeutic options.
