Fernando Civeira


  • Prof. Fernando Civeira is specialist in Internal Medicine and got his M.D. and Ph.D. at Zaragoza University, in Spain.
  • He served as Research Associate at Tufts University, Boston, Mass, during the period of 1987-89
  • He is the Chief of the Clinic and Research Laboratory in Lipids and Arteriosclerosis at the Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet, Zaragoza (Spain).
  • He is full Professor of Medicine and Director of the Department of Medicine, Psychiatry and Dermatology, University of Zaragoza, Spain.
  • He served as President of the Spanish Arteriosclerosis Society, from 2012-2014. Currently, Prof Civeira is responsible for the Dyslipidemia Registry of the Spanish Atherosclerosis Society.

Prof. Fernando Civeira has led 30 national and international research projects on the field of dyslipidemias and atherosclerosis. He also has been actively engaged in 27 clinical trials on lipid metabolism and lipid-lowering drugs. 
He also authored more than 250 publications, including original articles, in so renowned journals as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JACC, Circulation, American Journal of Human Genetics, European Heart Journal, Atherosclerosis, Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology and so on…
His main research interest is the study of genetic dyslipidemias. Dr Civeira led the first international guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia published in Atherosclerosis in 2004.
