Recent journal highlights

The widespread consumption of energy-rich food and lack of physical activity have led to a steady increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, as well as ectopic fat accumulation. As such, diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver diesases (NAFLD) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases have become frequent clinical consequences in many countries worldwide. Several articles in the April and May issues of Atherosclerosis describe novel data from basic, clinical and population research on the interdependencies of these diseases.

Society elections - extended deadline for nomination to EC member & officer positions

The Election Committee, elected by EAS members, has been undertaking the task of selecting candidates to stand in the election for officer & member positions on the Society’s Executive Committee.

Having now had the opportunity to review nominations for the various posts, the Election Committee has reached a decision that the election process will benefit from extending the nomination period for a further two weeks.

The Committee members judge that all posts should be open for further nominations.

The decision to extend the nomination period should be viewed in light of the unprecedented, difficult time for our membership, many of whom have been focused on dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The extended deadline for nominations is July 08 (end of the day).

Nominations are welcome for three officer positions: Vice President, Treasurer Elect & Secretary; and three Executive Committee member positions.

Lecture of the week: "New lipid drugs: Is LDL done, ready for new targets?"

This week's Open Access lecture is Professor Erik Stroes' plenary lecture from our Maastricht congress.

Prof Stroes' major research interest over the last two decades has been the role of the vessel wall in atherogenesis, especially the contributions of lipid disorders and inflammation. Recent research has focused on targeting epigenetic changes in innate immune cells in atherosclerosis that may offer future potential for imaging, biomarkers and therapies.
