With regret, I inform EAS members of the death of one of the pioneers in our field, Professor Steve Schwartz (USA).

Stephen M. Schwartz, MD, PhD, a pioneer in the field of vascular biology and a longtime professor of pathology at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine, Seattle, died March 17 after being hospitalized with COVID-19.  Prof Schwartz received a BA in biology from Harvard University in 1963 and an MD from Boston University in 1967. He started a residency in the UW Department of Pathology in 1967 and received his PhD from the institution in 1973. From 1974 to 1979, he was an assistant professor of pathology and became a full professor in 1984.  He was considered a giant among investigators of the biology of smooth muscle cells and the structure of blood vessels

Prof Göran Hansson, who as a post doc was mentored by Prof Schwartz in the 1980s, speaks for many of us with these words of tribute. “Steve was an exceptional man, very bright, knowledgeable, imaginative, generous, and provocative. He brought out the best in us by stimulating our creativity and by provoking us to reconsider much of what we thought we knew. For him, there was no limit to what science could accomplish, and he was very proud that he had trained a group of postdocs in that spirit. We owe him a lot.”

On behalf of the Society’s members, current and former leadership, I send our condolences and sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Prof Schwartz at this difficult time.
