Introducing Featured Open Lectures

This is a new initiative from the Society to highlight our online educational platform EAS ACADEMY. Every other month we select one interesting lecture from a recent course or congress and make it available for free, to members and non-members.

Open Lecture March-April 2020

Biomarkers predicting CVD, EAS Academy, Professor Chris Packard, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom.

This lecture was given by Professor Chris Packard as a plenary presentation at the 87th EAS Congress in Maastricht, 2019.
Professor Packard holds an Honorary professorship of Vascular Biochemistry at the University of Glasgow. Professor Packard has been for many years a frontline researcher in the field of cardiovascular prevention and lipoproteins as well as in the metabolism of lipoproteins. In this presentation he discussed the role of current established biomarkers as well role of upcoming new markers. His focus was on lipids and lipoproteins but he also discussed other markers such as inflammation related proteins. He divides the biomarkers into three categories: Biomarkers in the causal pathway; Systems biomarkers –‘reporters’ and ‘regulators’ of cardio-metabolic dysfunction and Disease progression biomarkers.
In his conclusion he emphasized the importance of utilizing the different information that different biomarkers can give.
