This 3-day course is organised by EAS, University of Cambridge Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute for Metabolic Sciences and University of Cambridge BHF Centre for excellence.

The Course is targeted towards
• late stage PhD students
• early stage post docs

Learning objectives:

The Course provides a practical introduction to the analysis of data pertaining to selected aspects of cardiovascular data.

The course includes lectures from experts on the topics of heart function, vascular disease, obesity and diabetes as well as practically focused talks on how to use large animal models to study cardiovascular disease and for the development of pharmacological and cell-based therapies to prevent or regress the development of vascular disease.

In addition to the lectures three computer practicals will introduce the concepts behind:

  1. Phenotyping of vascular disease (carotid arteries and aorta including ostia) in rodents
  2. Analysis of energy balance in rodents
  3. Analysis of insulin sensitivity in rodents

Participants on the Course will be introduced to two areas of preclinical research with tours of animal phenotyping facilities covering:

  1. Different models of cardiovascular disease, in large animals such as sheep to smaller species, such as the chicken embryo (at the University of Cambridge Barcroft Centre)
  2. How mouse models can be used to study different aspects of cardiometabolic diseases including heart function, vascular disease, obesity and diabetes

The 3-day course will take place from Tuesday, July 02 - Thursday, July 04, 2019.

Course location

The Course will be held at the University of Cambridge, Metabolic Research Laboratories, Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science.
