Biography

Professor Steve Humphries has served on the Executive Committee since 2000 and was EAS Treasurer from September 2003 until December 2007. In November of 2007 he was selected to be Editor in Chief of the EAS journal 'Atherosclerosis'. His research interests over the last twenty years have been the use of genetic tools to explore the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and also to develop DNA-based tests for risk of CHD.  He heads a group of over 30 clinicians and scientists at University College in London and is the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Genetics.

Since 2002 he has been the Chief Executive Officer of the London IDEAS Genetics Knowledge Park, one of six established by the British Government at that time.  The major remit of the Knowledge Park is to explain the role of genetics in determining human health and disease, both to the lay public as well as to professionals.  As part of this, he is the co-Director of the UK pilot project for developing cascade testing for familial hypercholesterolaemia, a topic on which he has published extensively.

Professor Humphries also serves on several government committees overseeing the use of genetic testing in the UK.  He is an active member of the European Lipoprotein club and past committee member and Treasurer, and is a member of the British and International Societies for Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

He is on the editorial board of several journals, including The Annals of Human Genetics, and serves as a referee for many other high impact journals.  He has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers and reviews in the field of cardiovascular disease.
