Biography

Professor Marja-Riitta Taskinen MD Her main interest is in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. Her longstanding original and important observations have contributed significantly to the understanding of lipoprotein abnormalities, genetics and pathophysiology in Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and the Metabolic Syndrome. Recently, she has been running extensive family studies of both the FCHL and low HDL traits. She has also participated in several international lipid management intervention trials (LOCAT, DAIS, FIELD).

Prof. Taskinen has been tremendously productive scientifically and has published more than 260 original publications and 80 reviews and chapters. She is internationally highly recognized as an invited speaker all over the world.

Her outstanding achievements have been recognised by several international honours and awards including the Castelli Pedroli Prize (EASD 1996), The Hippocrates Prize (2000), the Claude Bernard Award (EASD 2002) and recently the Edwin Bierman Award ( ADA 2004). She has been honoured by the Honorary Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (1997). Prof. Taskinen has been actively involved in activities of the EAS and IAS, as well as those of the EASD and IDF. She was chairperson for the 1997 IDF Meeting in Helsinki . She has also organized both EAS and IAS workshops in Helsinki .

In addition to her work on the EAS Executive Committee and International Task Force for Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease, she has been appointed secretary of the International Atherosclerosis Society and recently selected to chair the IAS European Federation. Professor Taskinen is also a member of several International Advisory Boards for major pharmaceutical companies.
