Professor Zeljko Reiner MD main scientific interest is lipidology, pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and preventive cardiology.
Professor Zeljko Reiner was born in 1953 in Zagreb, Croatia and received his MD and PhD degrees at Zagreb University. He has been a visiting professor in USA, Germany and France and is consultant in internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolic diseases in Zagreb University Hospital Center and head of the Department of metabolic diseases. He is a full professor at School of Medicine, Zagreb University, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London), Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and Fellow of American College of Cardiology.
He was the founder and is still president of Croatian Atherosclerosis Society, founder and vice-president of Croatian Obesity Society, founder of Croatian Hypertension Society and was Secretary general of the Croatian Medical Association. He has served as state secretary for health and as minister of health of Croatia. He is a full member of the Croatian National Academy of Sciences and Arts, and is a chairman of it’s Atherosclerosis Research Committee and is a honorary member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bosnia and Herzegovina, president of Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences and president of the Croatian national health council. He was a member of the WHO Executive board in Geneva and was chairman of the WHO Tobacco - free Europe Committee. He was also member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress Programme Committee, member of European Joint Prevention Committee for Cardiovascular Diseases, and is one of the authors of the last Joint European guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention in clinical practice.
At the moment he is co-chairing the EAC/ESC European guidelines on management of dyslipidemias task force and is chairing the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (EACPR) Board Committee on Science and Guidelines. He is also a member of the ESC Committee for Practice Guidelines. He is on the editorial boards of several journals (Eur J Cardiovasc Prev Rehabil etc.) and is reviewer for many journals (Lancet etc.). He has published many papers and been editor or coauthor of 17 books.
