Jan Borén, MD, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine at the Institute of Medicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and a consultant physician at the Department of Clinical Chemistry, Sahlgrenska University Hospital. He obtained his medical degree in 1988 at the University of Gothenburg, where he also completed his PhD in 1992. Since 2006, Professor Borén has served as Director of the Strategic Research Centre at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (CMR), Gothenburg.
Professor Borén’s long-term interests are to define the mechanisms that regulate the secretion and metabolism of atherogenic lipoproteins and to clarify their atherogenicity. His research programme is translational and involves both in vitro and in vivo studies, mouse models and human kinetic studies. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Irvine H. Page Young Investigator Research Award at the 70th Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association (1997), the Eric K Fernström Prize for Young Swedish Scientists (2000), the Göran Gustafsson Prize in Medicine from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (2004), and became a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg (2013). Professor Borén has been actively involved in activities of EAS. He serves as Treasurer on the Executive Committee, is co-Editor of the official journal of EAS –Atherosclerosis, and has been involved in organizing EAS congresses and advanced courses.
