Journal highlights - March issue

In our regular feature, Editor-in-Chief Arnold von Eckardstein highlights interesting articles from recent issues of Atherosclerosis journal.

Both quantitative and qualitative differences in body fat are generally considered as important determinants of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, either directly or indirectly, by associated risk factors such as dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, hypertension, low grade inflammation and prothrombotic state.

In the March issue of Atherosclerosis, Volume 258, several articles describe the associations of overweight and obesity, body fat mass, ectopic fat accumulation in the liver, or lipogenic treatment with corticoids with the incidence of cardiovascular events or preclinical measures of atherosclerotic CVD.

Overall, the reported data provide further evidence that the atherogenic effects of both increased and ectopic body fat are modified by ethnicity, sex, age, and comorbidities.

40th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Lipoprotein - open for abstracts submission until May 01

The 40th Scientific meeting of the ELC will be held at the Evangelische Akademie in Tutzing, Germany, from September 04-07, 2017.

The scientific programme to be discussed at the meeting has been selected by the organising committee. It covers five key topics in five working sessions spread over four days. The meeting opens with a Keynote Lecture from Prof Bart Staels, Lille, France entitled "Lipids and lipoproteins linking fatty liver and cardiovascular disease" on Monday evening, September 04, 2017.

The concept of the meeting is a good mix of presentations by research investigators, postdocs and graduate students. The abstracts are all selected according to their scientific merit, and it has become one of the traditions of the ELC meeting that many graduate students give presentations.

Abstract submission will be open until May 01, 2017.

58th International Conference on the Bioscience of Lipids, ICBL

On behalf of the  organising committee EAS is pleased to annouce the 58th International Conference on the Bioscience of Lipids (ICBL) – Lipid Signaling in Health and Disease which will be held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), September 10–14, 2017.

The 58th ICBL Symposium is co-organized by ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, and the University Hospital of Zürich to entice both young and established scientists with a focus on translational lipid research to shape this international event.

The conference will focus on the role of lipid signaling in the development, diagnostics, and treatment of diseases. Top international scientists accepted our invitation to present their most recent findings on the metabolism, transport, function and regulation of sterols, bile acids, triglycerides, fatty acids, and sphingolipids with respect to cardiovascular, metabolic, or infectious diseases as well as immunity. In addition there will be numerous opportunities for young investigators to present their research in the form of short talks.
