J. C. FRUCHART is awarded the 2008 Anitschkow Prize in Atherosclerosis Research

Professor Jean Charles Fruchart has been awarded the 2008 Anitschkow Prize in Atherosclerosis Research from the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) for his outstanding work on the role of lipoprototeins, the mechanisms involved in each stage of atherogenesis, and the environmental and genetic factors that promote lesion formation.

Several important accomplishments within the fields of cardiovascular and metabolic research can be attributed to Professor Fruchart. He has significantly contributed to the elucidation of the diagnostic and prognostic importance of HDL and LDL subclasses, and he was the first to compare the functional properties of the HDL subclasses LpA-I and LpA-I/A-II.

Professor Fruchart and his colleagues systematically elucidated the hypo-lipidemic effects of fibrates and unraveled the molecular basis of these effects. The identification of PPARα as the target of fibrates opened avenues for our broadened understanding of PPARs in metabolism and vascular cell biology and may, in its extension, form the basis for new targets for treatment.

He has recently shown that lipoprotein lipase (LPL), apoC-III and apoA-V play a pivotal role in the metabolism of plasma triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and in post-prandial hyper-triglyceridemia.
Professor Fruchart has a distinguished academic career. He has published more than 700 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of numerous scientific societies and serves on the editorial boards of many scientific journals. He has received several awards for outstanding achievement, including the Great Gold Medal of the Institut Pasteur 1994, Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1997 and the Galien Prize in 1998. He has been President of the International Society of Atherosclerosis since 2006.

EAS Fellowships, Awards and Prizes

The EAS Fellowships in Atherosclerosis Research

The EAS scientific committee is pleased to inform you of a new Fellowship program that we will be able to offer in 2008 thanks to the support of 2 of our corporate members, MSD and Sanofi–aventis. The 2 EAS Fellowships, one for 6 months and the second for 12, are aimed to promote interactions and collaboration between European laboratories in the field of atherosclerosis and linked metabolic disturbances. The basic or applied/clinical collaborative research projects should involve two Principal Investigators,at least one of whom is an EAS member. The fellowships are intended for postdoctoral fellows involved in the collaborative projects. The details of these Fellowships are clearly explained in the file attached at the bottom of this page. The deadline for submitting applications is November 1 , 2007. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity.

The EAS “Anitschkow Prize”.

This annual award is intended to recognize outstanding research in the field of atherosclerosis and linked metabolic disturbances. The winner receives the Anitschkow Medal and a 10,000 Euro prize. Next year we will present the 2008 Prize during our annual EAS meeting in Istanbul in April.  Please send us your nominees for next years award . The nomination criteria are attached at the bottom of this page and the deadline for nomination is December 1st,2007.

The EAS ‘Prizes for Young Scientists in Atherosclerosis Research’

These prizes will again be offered in 2008. These prizes for young scientists are intended to recognize distinction shown by publications that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of atherosclerosis and linked metabolic disturbances. The two 2000 Euro awards, one for basic research and one for clinical work, will be presented to two researchers at the EAS Congress in Istanbul next spring. The nomination criteria are attached below. The deadline for nomination is December 1st,2007. I encourage you to take advantage of these valuable opportunities for 2008.
