Over the last few years, major advances have been achieved in understanding the causal role of elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] in premature cardiovascular disease (CVD). These new findings have prompted a critical appraisal of the evidence base in the form of a Consensus Paper, published in the European Heart Journal. In this paper the EAS Consensus Panel critically evaluate lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] as a cardiovascular risk factor and advise on screening for elevated plasma Lp(a), on desirable levels, and on therapeutic strategies.
